What is a ragpicker?
Thousands of India's poor subsist by picking waste items from roadsides, trash piles, garbage dumps, and forgotten areas that can be resold. Iron rods, plastic bags, metal grating, notebooks, cardboard, newspaper, rubber shoe soles, wires, cables, aluminum, glass, bottles, electrical parts, nails and coal are commonly collected. These items are then sold to a scrap shop which pays the children by the kilogram of refuse collected. Ragpicking shops then sell the waste to factories, which recycle the materials, for a higher rate.

How will my donation be spent?
When donating to REDS, it is asked that you include a cover letter stating your intent for its use. In that way, we are best able to focus your money where your have the greatest interest. If no cover letter is included, REDS will use the money for the program that is most in need at that time. At present we are seeking funds for the 2nd floor of the STC Multipurpose building.

What other organizations does REDS work with?
REDS is an independently functioning NGO with support from The Marianist Society, Fondazione P. Alessi Fratelli Domenticati Onlus, and individual donors. The funding for the
loans of our women's Self Help Groups comes from Janalakshmi Social Services, a Bangalore-based NGO that microfinances loans, catering to families and individuals living below the poverty line.

How do SHG members use their loans?
Most REDS SHG members use their loans to start petty businesses, fund their childrens' educations, make home improvements, pay mortgages, pay hospital bills, or pay other loans taken at higher interest rates.
