Working with a local NGO, Janalakshmi Social Services, the REDS Self Help Groups encourage women of the local slums to save their money. The coordinator and three animators meet with area women and motivate them to form groups. Little by little, money is accumulated, saved and can be taken as a loan by active members. Thus, the women become more self-reliant and empowered, able to pay school fees, hospital bills, or start small businesses.

SHG MELA & WOMEN'S SAVING DAY
The SHG Mela and Women's Saving Day was celebrated in conjunction with Independence Day this year on 15 August at the Matreya Charitable Trust Hall in Austin Town, Bangalore. Over 1000 SHG members and their families assembled to raise the national flag and process to the hall. Upon arrival they were greeted by the event coordinators and listened to the status of the program, conveyed by Mr. J. Lourdusamy, Director of REDS Self Help Groups.
Mr. Cecil Lazarus, Head of Operations of Janalakshmi Social Services, was the Chief Guest of the event, speaking about the services they offer and his appreciation for REDS' work in the area. The REDS Tailoring Units, STC, and staff entertained the crowd with their dances and skit. Perhaps the most powerful talks of the day came from the SHG members themselves, who spoke about their experiences within their groups and the benefits they have received since. The day concluded with all members in attendance taking the SHG pledge, followed by a thanks by Fr. Pragasam, and a hearty lunch.
